About Kaltura

Kaltura is a web-based video management platform that allows for the upload, editing, managing and sharing of videos and other media. Kaltura can be accessed from bCourses (Canvas), as well as MediaSpace. (Note, however, that our primary supported Kaltura environment is bCourses and we prioritize instructional uses.)

Recordings from a variety of tools, including Course Capture, Zoom, and Kaltura Capture (desktop application) can be saved directly to Kaltura.

What you can do with Kaltura

You can use Kaltura within bCourses to record, upload, edit, manage, and share videos directly in bCourses sites, regardless of where the audio and video files were recorded. In addition, recordings from RTL's Course Capture service automatically get put into Kaltura (as do all cloud recordings from our campus Zoom account for those users that have enabled the Zoom to Kaltura Integration; see Frequently Asked Questions about the Zoom to Kaltura Integration), though you will likely need to take steps to make recordings available to your students.

Those with Teacher, TA, Designer, or Owner roles in a bCourses site can organize media in a gallery into playlists, embed videos into course pages, and view analytics about how students are engaging with videos in the course.

Kaltura is available in bCourses in the following locations:

  • My Media link in bCourses main navigation menu (personal media, not tied to a specific course)
  • Media Gallery link in bCourses site menu (media all members of the site can access)
  • The Rich Content Editor via the Embed Kaltura Media widget

* Kaltura Capture is a desktop application that helps you record any combination of voice, webcam video, screen action, and presentation slides (e.g. PowerPoint). You can then upload and manage your recordings alongside other Kaltura content in bCourses using My Media or Media Gallery. You are not required, however, to use Kaltura Capture in order to use Kaltura in bCourses.

Students' Access to Kaltura

Kaltura is available to students in bCourses in the following locations:

  • My Media link in bCourses global navigation menu (far left navigation bar in bCourses)
  • Media Gallery link in many bCourses site menus
  • The Rich Content Editor via the Embed Kaltura Media widget.

My Media is your personal repository of media. Media in your My Media can only be seen by you, unless you publish the media or add collaborators. You can get media into your My Media by uploading existing media files, linking to existing YouTube recordings, recording new content with the Express Capture function, or using the Kaltura Capture desktop application. You can also take advantage of the Zoom to Kaltura integration: if you enable this integration, any Zoom meetings you record to the Cloud will be copied to your My Media.

Media Gallery is bCourses site-specific and contains content that the instructor has chosen to add to the site. Instructors may also allow students to contribute to their site’s Media Gallery.

In addition, users (both instructors and students) may add Kaltura media content to other areas in bCourses, such as in Announcements, Discussions or Assignments. Kaltura has features to help students use video content provided by their instructors in various ways that may aid in learning and studying.

Note that the Kaltura Media platform provides automated-captioning which supports broad usability of the media. However, automated captions are insufficient for students with a Letter of Accommodation (LOA) requiring captioned media. (At the beginning of each term, the Disabled Students Program (DSP) Captioning Department will notify instructors that they have a student with a Letter of Accommodation (LOA) requiring realtime captioning and/or captioned media.)
