About Course Design Tools
Course Design Tools provide instructors with resources to develop pedagogically sound remote courses. This service includes the Core Template which uses bCourses’ built-in course construction and management tools including Pages, Modules, Discussions, Assignments, and Quizzes. The Core Template offers a consistent organization founded in best practices in remote instruction pedagogy that ensures students can easily access materials and engage with the course without the need for instructors to learn any additional tools.
Pedagogical Benefits
Starting with this Core Template and course design tools when building a course site on bCourses ensures accessibility and ease in navigation for students.
Core Template Getting Started
The Core Template was developed using bCourses' built-in course construction and management tools including Pages, Modules, Discussions, Assignments, and Quizzes. It offers a consistent organization founded in best practices in online pedagogy that ensures students can easily access materials and engage with your course without the need to learn any additional tools.
To access the Core Template, import it from Canvas Commons into your course site. The following resource walks through the steps.
Once you have imported the Core Template into your course site, review the resources provided to learn more about how to use it with your course materials.
Import the Core Template
Canvas Commons is a repository of digital resources that allows users to share and import content into a course site. The RTL Core Template is available in Canvas Commons to UC Berkeley users in the Instructor, TA, or Designer roles.
Follow the steps below to import the template to your new course site.
1. Open Commons
In the Global Navigation, select Commons.
2. Find Resource
Enter "Core Template" in the Search bar.
3. Open Resource
To view the Core Template details, select the resource title.
4. Import Resource
To import the Core Template, select the Import/Download button.
5. Select Course, Select Import into Course
Search for the course into which you would like to import the Core Template or select the course from the list. Then, select the Import into Course button.
6. View Import Notification
View the import status notification at the top of your screen.
7. Replace Course Site Icon on the Dashboard
After importing the template, you'll notice that the RTL icon image is part of your new course on the bCourses Dashboard card view. Go to the course navigation and select Settings to remove the RTL image and replace it with one of your own or leave it blank. Then select the Update Course Details button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.
Notes
Importing a course more than once may have unintended consequences. If you import content into a new course, edit the content in the new course, and later import the previous content again, the imported content will override the existing content.
Importing the Core Template will overwrite any content you have entered on the Syllabus page so it is recommended that you import the template before you populate the Syllabus page in your course site.

Quality Assurance (QA)
Quality Assurance (QA) is the process of checking the technical components of your course site before students have access to it. This process includes confirming all links function correctly, materials are fully accessible, and materials you'd like students to access are published, or conversely, materials you'd like hidden until a certain date are not visible to students. There are two key tools available in bCourses that help streamline QA: Course Link Validator and Ally Instructor Report. Additionally, RTL has developed a bCourses Site Checklist to help guide you through the QA process.
