How to propose a new program
If you're interested in creating a noncredit program for edX or Coursera, we’re here to help you explore the possibilities and set you up for success. Here’s what the process looks like:
Step 1: Consultation
You’ll meet with the noncredit programs coordinator to discuss your course idea. This conversation will help you assess whether your proposed course is a good fit for edX or Coursera. You’ll also learn more about course development costs, accessibility requirements, and what to expect in terms of enrollment and potential revenue. You can email teaching@berkeley.edu to schedule a consultation.
Step 2: Submission
If you decide to move forward, you’ll complete a short intake form outlining your course goals, audience, and design. The noncredit programs coordinator is available to support you through this step, and may follow up with clarifying questions after you submit the form.
Step 3: Review
Your proposal will be reviewed for overall feasibility, including instructor availability, departmental support, platform alignment, and readiness for development. If your course is intended to generate revenue, we may also consult with campus partners who specialize in online program market analysis.
Step 4: Recommendation
Based on this review, our team will prepare a recommendation for academic leadership.
Step 5: Decision
The final decision about whether the proposal will move forward is made by the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education.
