[Resolved] bCourses Learning Management System Extended Downtime due to Global AWS Outage

October 20, 2025

[Resolved: This outage was resolved by the vendor at approximately 4:15pm October, 20, 2025]

Overview:

Between 12am and 4pm on Monday, October 20th, bCourses experienced an outage. During this time, students were unable to access materials or submit assignments, instructors and GSIs were unable to communicate with their students (via the Announcements/Inbox feature) or review and grade assignments. We understand that bCourses is critical to many instructional functions and recognize the inconvenience caused by an extended outage.

What happened:

The inaccessibility of bCourses was due to a major service disruption affecting Amazon Web Services (AWS), which hosts bCourses' core infrastructure. This was a global incident impacting numerous organizations and services within and beyond UC Berkeley. Kaltura was also impacted by this outage. You can access My Media via Mediaspace, if you want to upload media and/or see the status of your media—including Course Capture recordings—but delays in the media processing and captioning may continue even after bCourses is restored.

The latest status updates:

We communicate updates about bCourses availability on the UC Berkeley System Status page: https://systemstatus.berkeley.edu/event/198515/

We will continue to update you as the availability of bCourses changes. The vendor, Instructure, is also keeping its status page updated https://status.instructure.com/

Communicating with students:

If you need to communicate with students while bCourses is unavailable, see this guide for steps on how to access your course roster including email addresses from SIS/CalCentral

If you had previously created a bCourses mailing list for your course, it will continue to work while bCourses is unavailable.

Accessing Zoom Meetings directly:

If you have scheduled Zoom meeting via bCourses, you can find the meeting URL on https://berkeley.zoom.us/

Accommodating missed assignments:

If your course had assignments due during this period, you may consider extending the due date when bCourses. Please contact bcourseshelp@berkeley.edu if you require any assistance with due date accommodations.
