Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) invites you to our Spring 2024 Teaching Kickoff and Social! Get ready for a fun couple of hours where we'll explore a range of topics to refresh your teaching approach. The event features a series of 15-minute sessions, followed by a fun mixer. It's the perfect opportunity to pick up new ideas, meet new colleagues, make connections, and enjoy some snacks. Let's start this semester with energy, inspiration, and a bit of social fun!

The sessions included in the event are:

  1. Who knew that Canvas could do that! bCourses Features That Can Save You Time

Curious about how bCourses (Canvas) can make your life easier? In this quick session, we reveal the hidden features of bCourses that are real time-savers. Learn about batch messaging, auto-grading tricks, leveraging reusable bank of comments and audio/video comments for feedback, dropping students’ lowest grades automatically, etc.

  1. Start the Semester Strong: Tips for Acing the First Week 

Kick off your semester with a mini workshop that's all about making your first week of class both impactful and memorable. We'll cover CTL resources that can support relationship building, orienting students to your class and teaching,  and learning about students’ background within your content area. Get ready for practical tips to elevate your teaching from the very beginning of the semester.

  1. Ready to Poll: Change Your Teaching Game 

Explore the potential of live polling to bring a new level of interaction to your lectures. In this session we'll introduce you to polling tools that are available to you such as iClicker Cloud and Poll Everywhere and we'll discuss the advantages and challenges of each tool, helping you make an informed choice for your classroom.

  1. Ready, Set, Accommodate: Proactive Accessibility Tips 

How can you prepare for disability accommodations in your course? What do the law and University policy require? What are common pitfalls to avoid? And how should you manage relations with DSP Specialists and students with accommodations? In this session we'll delve into practical tips and proactive strategies to ensure your course is ready to meet the needs of all students.

This event will be held in person in 117 Dwinelle Hall (Academic Innovation Studio). Light snacks will be served. We kindly request that you only register for the event if you can attend, as the capacity of the venue is limited.
