Kickstart Inclusive Teaching From Day One

Picture of Tara Mason Creating a learning environment that includes and supports all students can be challenging. Although inclusion and diversity are important to all of us, professional development can leave us wondering, “Where do I begin?”

Join our workshop as we provide practical strategies to implement inclusivity in your courses. This workshop is part of a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) series, with future topics and dates TBD. UDL guides instructors to proactively implement multiple ways to demonstrate understanding, engage in content, and have content represented.

In this workshop, we will guide you step-by-step through implementing UDL to make immediate changes that promote student belonging and help you create an inclusive learning environment. We understand that time is of the essence for instructors, so we will focus on low-input, high-impact actions to kick off this inclusive teaching series. Future topics will include student identity and cultivating joy using UDL. 

In this workshop you will learn how to:

  • What? Inclusive Teaching & UDL

  • Why? The brain & UDL 

  • How? Practical tips and strategies to promote belonging using UDL through 

    • Student accessibility 

    • Emotional connectedness  

    • Pathways for persistence and success 

Tara Mason, Ph.D. is part of the RTL organization and serves as the Universal Design for Learning Consultant for the Center for Teaching and Learning. She holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from Texas Tech University and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Prior to joining UC Berkeley, she served as Assistant Professor of Inclusive Education, Program Coordinator, and interim Co-Director of the Education Department at Western Colorado University. She has over 20 years of experience working in K-12 as a special and general education teacher, coach, and interventionist. Her research primarily focuses on Universal Design for Learning, writing, promoting equity and inclusion, assistive technology, trauma-informed instruction, mentoring, and special education teacher preparation. During her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, cooking, reading novels, biking, and traveling.
