Assessment Pivots - Pedagogy Improv Pt 2

November 5, 2025 - 11:00 AM-12:15 PM

Location: This is an in-person event and will be held in 117 Dwinelle Hall (Academic Innovation Studio). Please RSVP to receive a calendar invite.

Intended Audience: Faculty, Instructors, Graduate Student Instructors

The Pedagogy Improv series invites you to explore real-time teaching strategies through interactive, hands-on scenarios. Each session features live demonstrations from faculty and opportunities to practice responsive, in-the-moment approaches to common classroom challenges.

This is the second session in the two-part series, focused on flexible, in-the-moment assessment strategies. This interactive session will feature a panel of 3-4 instructors who will demonstrate "on-the-fly" assessment pivots in response to student understanding or misunderstanding. For instance, the panel might explore how to implement formative assessment strategies to check for student understanding mid-lecture quickly, and then consider what to do with that immediate information – perhaps backing up to review confused concepts, or pivoting to a different instructional approach to explain concepts in a new way. Following this demonstration, participants will be invited to engage in their improvised assessment scenarios, exploring challenges and opportunities that arise when assessing both large and small enrollment courses. These scenarios will encourage participants to consider how to adjust assessment methods for deeper learning, such as designing opportunities for students to revise items they missed on summative assessments, or utilizing tools like ‘exam wrappers’ to facilitate student reflection and learning from past evaluations. Come play pedagogy improv assessments on the fly with us and leave with strategies you can try in your next class!
