Hybrid Departmental Space Program

Research, Teaching, and Learning (RTL) has funding available to enable and support a small number of departmental spaces with hybrid technology to support academic activities in their departmental spaces. RTL is excited to be able to offer this opportunity to campus departments and to further access to hybrid technology across campus.

RTL encourages all academic departments to submit a proposal for this program. While the focus of this program is on a standard installation (described below), we understand that this specific technology may not be appropriate for your space. Please submit a proposal regardless, as all submissions will be considered and evaluated on academic impact by a panel of RTL and Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) staff.

  • The space must be used for student academic activities the majority of the time.
  • The department will need to identify an internal member to facilitate day-to-day local support for the room and act as the RTL contact.
  • The room may need to be made available after hours for installation to occur.
  • The department will be responsible for facilitating and funding certain aspects of the installation relating to campus services (electrical, network and Zoom Room licensing) as needed.
  • The focus of this program is hybrid technology. General audio/visual equipment and/or upgrades to existing equipment are not a part of this program outside of what is needed to enable the hybrid aspect.
  • Deadline extended! Proposals must be received by January 30, 2023 for first round consideration. If funding is still available after the first round, a second round may be available but this program will end June 30, 2023, so submitting for the first round is highly encouraged.

  • Installations will occur during the Spring 2023 semester.
  • RTL will consult with the department to determine exactly what technology is appropriate for their space and to plan the project. A MOU will be generated at this point.
  • The department will need to fund and order any electrical, network or Zoom Room licensing needed. RTL staff can help to facilitate this process. (A Zoom Room license is currently $249/yr; network drops are approx $300 each and two may be required for the install. Electrical is dependent on the room construction.)
  • RTL will handle all equipment purchasing and receiving.
  • RTL will schedule and facilitate the installation, either using internal RTL engineering resources or an outside integrator.
  • Upon completion of the installation, RTL staff will commission and document the install.
  • RTL will provide a training for the department on the use of the room and work with the department RTL contact to launch the technology internally.
  • RTL will provide technical support for the room for a period of at least one calendar year after installation is complete.

The "Standard" Install

An example is pictured above. While this may seem like a simple installation, this equipment has the ability to transform a room with no installed equipment into a fully fledged hybrid presentation and collaboration space. The Zoom Room technology is proven and very easy to use. It also has the familiar Zoom user interface that is ideal for use by non-technical instructors and staff.
  • Zoom Room appliance with camera, microphones and speakers
  • Two large displays
  • Associated mounting hardware
If your room has installed technology already that would preclude a "standard" install, an appropriate solution to enable equivalent functionality integrated with your existing equipment will be developed during the consultation process.
We look forward to seeing your proposals!
