RTL was made aware during Summer 2025 that Kaltura had inadvertently deleted or rendered unplayable a subset of Kaltura media files that had been created prior to 2022.
While many of the deletions were consistent with our retention policy as stated on the Kaltura Service Policies page (“Videos that are not played in over 4 years will be deleted”), some content outside of this was also impacted, including videos with more recent playbacks.
Despite our best efforts, the vendor has been unable to provide us a list of precisely which Kaltura entries were impacted.
If you are an instructor that reuses bCourses content, we strongly recommend that, after you do any imports from older course sites, you review all imported pages, as well as the videos in your Media Gallery. Reviewing imported content is a good practice, and especially important when imported pages or Media Galleries may contain older Kaltura videos, to ensure all content is available and playable for students.
The vendor has reassured us that the process they were running that deleted the videos has been fully stopped. However, please note that our contract requires us to reduce storage in the near future. As a result, we will eventually need to remove Kaltura media that hasn't been played in four years. RTL commits to providing ample advance notice before any content is removed, along with guidance on how users can save their content.
