In 2024 the Department of Justice finalized an update to Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, setting a specific technical bar for the digital materials public colleges and universities share with students: readings, slides, videos, and course sites alike.
In practice, this means things like adding descriptive text for images, using proper headings so screen readers can navigate your content, and providing accurate captions for videos. These aren't just legal requirements, they're also practices that benefit all students and make it easier to support those with specific accommodation needs.
In this session we will make sense of these new requirements, build our understanding through short classroom scenarios, and create a +1 accessible teaching goal to carry this work forward after our session.
This session will run for 30 minutes, with an additional 15 minutes reserved for questions.

Facilitator:
Tara Mason, Ph.D. is the Universal Design for Learning Consultant at the Center for Teaching and Learning at UC Berkeley. She holds a Ph.D. in Special Education from Texas Tech University and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She has over 20 years of experience working in K-12 as a special and general education teacher, coach, and interventionist. Her research primarily focuses on Universal Design for Learning, writing, promoting equity and inclusion, assistive technology, trauma-informed instruction, mentoring, and special education teacher preparation.
